I’m constantly writing To-Do lists, sticking them up on the fridge, then stick them in my bag while I’m rushing out the door for another busy day. Here are 5 steps to help you manage your time and make the most of the 24 hours in a day, as alas we don’t have more than those!
Step 1 – Define your Goals
Without goals, time management is like a hammer without a nail. Get into the habit of writing down your goals, in a realistic and specific way. Make a list of things you need and the actions you need to take to reach your goals.
Picturing how to get there, will help you spot opportunities that might otherwise go unnoticed.
Step 2 – Set your priorities
Learn how to distinguish between the things you ‘must do’, ‘should do’ and ‘could do’.
> Things you ‘must do’ call for your immediate attention.
> Things you ‘should do’ are important things that need to be done but that are not urgent.
> Things you ‘could do’ include things that are optional, that are ‘nice to do’ and would add an interesting flavour to your life.
Step 3 – Plan Wisely
Planning helps bridge the gap between where you are now and where you hope to be at some future point.
Find time during the day to sit down and plan, preferably in writing. Write the things you need to do during the day/week/month/year. Use a diary or a planner.
Step 4 – Schedule concretely
Whereas planning is deciding what to do, scheduling is deciding when to do it.
Scheduling requires you to set specific times and dates to do the things required. It requires you to make a commitment to make things happen – and to happen on time!
Step 5 – Manage Time Wasters
Time wasters are activities which are unnecessary or which cause you to waste time. They can either be things you can control, such as the ability to say ‘No’, lack of interest or things which are beyond your control, such as unexpected visits or crises.
